Okay, so I’ve been seeing this word “prolly” pop up everywhere lately, and it’s been bugging me. At first, I started seeing it in text messages from my younger cousins. They use it all the time, like, “I’ll prolly be there around 8” or “We’re prolly going to that new burger place.”
Then, I noticed it creeping into social media. Influencers, you know, the ones with millions of followers, started using “prolly” in their captions and even in their videos! Like, one TikToker I follow was talking about her weekend plans and said, “I’ll prolly just chill at home.” What’s up with that?
- I started asking around, trying to figure out if this was some new slang I was just too old to understand.
- My friend, who’s a bit of a grammar nerd, said it’s just a lazy way of saying “probably.” Apparently, people think it’s faster to type “prolly” than “probably.”
- I mean, we’re talking about saving two letters here. Is it really that much effort to type out the whole word?
I even did some digging online. I found all these articles and forum posts about “prolly.” Some people were saying it’s a perfectly acceptable slang term, while others were calling it an abomination of the English language. It’s wild how divided people are over this one word!
My Personal Experiment
So, I decided to conduct a little experiment. I started using “prolly” in my own texts and social media posts, just to see how it felt. And you know what? It felt weird. Like, I was trying too hard to be cool or something. It just didn’t sound like me.
After a week of using “prolly,” I decided to ditch it. I went back to saying “probably” like a normal person. And honestly, it felt so much better. I realized that I don’t need to use trendy slang to fit in. I’m perfectly happy with my regular vocabulary.
I guess the whole “prolly” thing is just not for me. Maybe it’s a generational thing, or maybe I’m just old-fashioned. But hey, at least I gave it a try, right?
