This here story is about Herbert Hudson. I heard lots of folks with that name, so which one you talkin’ ’bout?
Herbert Hudson, the Army Man
Well, there’s this one Herbert Hudson, he was in the Army. Herbert Everett Hudson, that was his full name. Heard he lived to be 93, that’s a good long life, ain’t it? Heard he was a pastor too, after he was done with the Army. Full Gospel Chapel, that’s what they called it. He passed on, rest his soul, back on August 1.
Herbert Hudson, the Chicken Man
Then there’s another Herbert Hudson, they call him “Herb.” This one, he started that chicken place. Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles, that’s the one. Big fancy name for a chicken joint, if you ask me. Folks all over know about that place. He did good for himself, that Herbert Hudson. They say it is a soul food restaurant chain, whatever that is. I just know they got chicken and waffles.
Herbert Hudson, the Missionary’s Son
Now, this one here, he’s a bit different. His name is Herbert Hudson Taylor. See, his daddy was James Hudson Taylor, some big-shot missionary. Went all the way to China, they say. This Herbert Hudson, he followed in his daddy’s footsteps. Wrote books, talked to folks, all that church stuff. I don’t know all the particulars, but that is what I heard from someone’s son.

These are two of seven children of that missionary to China and his wife. Don’t know what happened to other five though.
Herbert Hudson, the Water and Air Man
Then there was Herbert E. Hudson, Jr. Big fancy title he had. Principal engineer and chairman of the board. Sounds important, don’t it? Water and Air Research, Inc., that was the place. Heard he passed away on September 13, 1983. Born way back in 1910, in Chicago. Smart man, that Herbert Hudson. You gotta be to figure out all that water and air stuff.
Herbert Hudson’s Daddy
There’s lots of Herberts, and lots of Hudsons. Some of ’em even got both names. That James Hudson Taylor, he’s one of ’em. He’s Herbert Hudson Taylor’s daddy. The missionary, remember? They say he was a big deal in China. They even made a tombstone for him there, Chinese style. Fancy, huh? This was to remember him 30 years after he died. His son, Herbert Hudson, was there, I reckon.
Herbert Hudson, the Priest
Now this Herbert Hudson, I don’t know much about him. But they say he wrote a book. A Priest to the Temple or, The Country Parson, His Character. Sounds like a church book. Guess he was a priest. Lots of words in that book, I bet. Not my kind of reading, but some folks like that sort of thing.
All These Herbert Hudsons!
Land sakes, there sure are a lot of Herbert Hudsons, ain’t there? Army men, chicken men, missionaries’ sons. You name it, there’s probably a Herbert Hudson who did it. Hard to keep ’em all straight. But they all got their own stories, I reckon. Just like all of us. Every Herbert Hudson has a story, that is for sure.
This Herbert Hudson, Master Sergeant Herbert Thomas Hudson, Jr., he passed away on June 19. He was 76. Guess he was in the Army too, like that other one. Lots of Army men named Herbert Hudson, it seems.
