Well, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout that Jim Dandy results, so I thought I’d tell ya what I know. That Jim Dandy, it’s a horse race, ya see. A big one, too. They run it every year, and it’s a real hootenanny.
Jim Dandy, What’s That?
Now, this here Jim Dandy race, it’s been goin’ on for a long time. Since 1964, I reckon. And they named it after some famous horse, also called Jim Dandy. This horse, now, he was somethin’ else. Won a big race back in 1930, the Travers Stakes, when nobody thought he could. Was a long shot, a real underdog, but he pulled it off. So they named this race after him, to remember that big win.
They run this Jim Dandy race up at Saratoga. Pretty place, from what I hear. Lots of fancy folks go there to watch the horses. It’s a big deal, this race. They give out a whole heap of money to the winner, $500,000. That’s more money than I’ve ever seen in my whole life. And all the best horses and jockeys, they come from all over to run in it.
Who’s Runnin’ This Year?
This year, they got some good ones runnin’. There’s this horse, Sierra Leone, he’s the favorite. Odds are 1-1, that means folks think he’s gonna win. Then there’s Fierceness, he’s got 9-5 odds. Not bad, not bad at all. And a couple others, Batten Down and Seize the Grey, they’re in there too. Six horses in total, all rarin’ to go.
Last year, there was this horse, Forte, he won the Jim Dandy. Was a real close one, came down to the wire. Beat out a couple other good ones, Saudi Crown and Angel of Empire. But then there was a big fuss after the race, somethin’ about the stewards makin’ a bad call. I don’t know all the details, but it sure got people riled up.
What Happened in the Past?
That Fierceness, now he did real good in the Florida Derby. Won that one, he did. But then he went to the Kentucky Derby, and well, he didn’t do so hot. Came in 15th, way back in the pack. But he’s been winnin’ and losin’ like that all along, so who knows what he’ll do this time.

There used to be another horse, Highland Falls, he was supposed to run, but I heard they scratched him. Same with Federal Judge, he ain’t runnin’ either. Don’t know why, maybe they got sick or somethin’. Horses are like people, they get under the weather sometimes.
Big Race, Big Money
Now, this Jim Dandy race, it’s a big deal. It’s a prep race for another big one, the Travers Stakes. So all these horses, they’re tryin’ to prove they’re the best, tryin’ to get ready for that Travers race. It’s like a warm-up, ya see. They gotta show what they’re made of.
And like I said, they give out a lot of money. $500,000 to the winner. That’s a lot of feed, a lot of hay. Could buy a whole farm with that kind of money. It’s enough to make a horse run its heart out, that’s for sure.
When’s It Happenin’?
They usually run this Jim Dandy race on the first Saturday of the late July Saratoga racing season. So, you wanna watch it, you best mark your calendar. It’s a big event, lots of excitement. People hollerin’ and cheerin’, horses runnin’ fast, it’s somethin’ to see.
This jockey, John Velazquez, he’s ridin’ Fierceness. He’s a good one, that Velazquez. Won a lot of races. And Flavien Prat, he’s on Sierra Leone. He’s good too. It’s gonna be a real showdown between those two, I reckon.
