Triumph 675 Motor Problems? Get Expert Advice Now!

So, I’ve been messing around with this Triumph 675 engine for a while now, and boy, it’s been a ride. It all started when I decided I wanted a bit more oomph from my Street Triple. You know, that feeling when you’re cruising down the highway and just want a bit more pep in your step?

First thing I did was check the exhaust, ’cause I heard these things tend to crack around the balancers. Sure enough, found a couple of small cracks. Nothing major, but I figured it was worth fixing while I was in there. Welded those up, and then moved on to the fuel system.

Turns out, the fuel tank lining was bubbling and peeling. Not a good sign. Apparently, it’s a common issue with these bikes. I cleaned that whole mess up, lined it properly, and put it all back together. I also checked the fuel capacity. It is about 17.4 liters, with an average of 20 kmpl.

Checking Electrical System

Next up, the electrical system. I’d heard some horror stories about the regulator/rectifier failing on these, so I was a bit nervous. But after 2009, Triumph seems to have sorted that out. Still, I went through everything with a fine-tooth comb. Checked all the connections, made sure nothing was loose or corroded. Gave the stator a good once-over, too. Everything looked pretty solid, thankfully.

But when I start it, it does not sound like all cylinders are firing. I think I need to check exhaust manifold temps with a non contact thermometer later.

Riding and Testing

  • Took it out for a test ride after all that, and it was running smoother, but still not quite right.
  • Tried accelerating past a car, and it just didn’t have the power it should.
  • Felt like it was missing something.

Back to the garage. I was starting to get a bit frustrated at this point. I mean, I’d gone through the whole engine, checked everything I could think of, and it was still acting up. Then I remembered something I’d read online about these engines sometimes having problems when they’re hot.

So, I let it cool down completely, then tried starting it again. Bingo! It fired right up, and it was running like a dream. Took it for another test ride, and it was a whole different machine. Power was back, throttle response was crisp, and it was just a blast to ride. Finally!

I guess the moral of the story is, these Triumph 675 engines can be a bit finicky, but if you’re patient and willing to put in the work, you can get them running great. And let me tell you, it’s worth it. This thing is an absolute beast now, and I’m loving every minute of it. Just wish I didn’t have to be depressed when I’m not out riding this thing!
