Silverstone F1 map tips: Where to watch.

My Go at Mapping Silverstone

Alright, so the other day, I got this idea stuck in my head – I wanted to draw out the Silverstone F1 track. You know, the British Grand Prix one. Don’t ask me why, sometimes these things just pop up. Maybe I saw something about it, maybe I was just fiddling around. Anyway, I decided, yeah, let’s give it a shot.

First thing, I needed the actual layout. I didn’t want anything super fancy, just the basic shape of the thing. Spent a bit of time just looking at pictures online, trying to get a feel for the flow of it. It’s got quite a few twists and turns, more than you’d think just watching on TV.

So, I grabbed a piece of paper, just scrap really, and a pencil. Started sketching it out. My first attempt? Rubbish. Looked more like a squiggly worm. Chucked that one. Started again. Tried to get the main straights down first – the Hangar Straight, the Wellington Straight (used to be the National Straight, I think?). Then started connecting them with the corners.

Getting the Corners Right

This part was trickier. Those sequences like Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel are tough to capture just right without it looking all cramped or too stretched out. Took a few tries, lots of erasing. Then there’s Copse, Stowe, Club… quite a few distinctive bits. I wasn’t aiming for perfect scale, mind you, just something that felt like Silverstone.

  • Started with the main straights.
  • Blocked in the major corner complexes.
  • Tried to get the flow between sections.
  • Lots of erasing and redrawing.

After I had a pencil outline I was kind of okay with, I thought about making it a bit clearer. Found a decent pen and went over the main track lines. Made it stand out more. Decided to add the pit lane too, just a simple line running alongside the main straight where it should be. Didn’t bother with individual pit boxes or anything, just the lane.

Finishing Touches

Looked at it again. Thought about adding grandstand locations or naming the corners, but decided against it. Wanted to keep it clean, just the track itself. Sometimes less is more, right? It’s not an engineering diagram, just my little interpretation of the circuit.

So yeah, that was my little project. Spent maybe an hour or so on it, just sketching and refining. It’s nothing amazing, but it was satisfying to actually sit down and do it, turn that little idea into something real, even if it’s just lines on paper. Pretty happy with how my simple Silverstone map turned out in the end. It’s pinned up on my board now.
