Okay, so I’ve been meaning to swap out the grips on my motorcycle for a while now. The old ones were worn, slick, and just generally uncomfortable. Time for an upgrade! First, I gathered my tools. Nothing fancy, just:

- New grips (obviously!)
- Utility knife
- Screwdriver (might not even need this)
- Hairspray (trust me on this one)
- Gloves for better grip
Getting Started.
I put on my gloves. Then I took the utility knife and carefully sliced down the length of the old grips. Be super careful here, don’t want to scratch the handlebars. Once I had a good cut, I just peeled them off like a banana. Some folks use compressed air to blow them off, but I didn’t have any handy. Mine came off pretty easy, thankfully.
There was some old adhesive residue left on the handlebars. I used the screwdriver to scrape off the bigger chunks. Didn’t need them super clean, just wanted to get rid of anything too sticky.
The Hairspray Trick.
Now, for the secret weapon: hairspray! I sprayed a good amount inside the new grips. Sounds weird, I know, but it acts as a lubricant to help slide them on. Once it dries, it becomes sticky and helps hold them in place. Genius, right?
With the inside of the grips good and coated, I quickly slid them onto the handlebars. You gotta work fast because the hairspray dries quickly. I wiggled and pushed until they were all the way on and positioned how I wanted them. It took a bit of effort, but nothing too crazy.
The End
And that’s it! I let the hairspray dry completely. It usually needs couple of minutes, and gave the new grips a good twist to make sure they were secure. They felt great! So much better than the old ones. Now my motorcycle looks cool. Total time for this little project? Maybe 20 minutes, tops. Super easy and totally worth it.
