Well, let me tell you, I heard somethin’ the other day that got me all riled up. It’s about them leaderboards for interceptions called back. You know, in that football game they play on TV. Sounds like a whole heap of nothin’ to me, but them young folks sure do get excited about it.
Interceptions Called Back, What’s the Big Deal?
So, these interceptions, they’re like when one fella catches the ball from the other team. But sometimes, they say it don’t count. They call it “called back.” Makes no sense to me. If you catch the ball, you catch the ball! But they got all these rules, like that pass interference thing. I don’t get it. But they will call the ball back for this pass interference and say the interception doesn’t count. It happened to a guy called Mahomes 17 times I heard. Can you believe it? Since 2018! I think they need to add a column to the leaderboards for interceptions called back for Mahomes. He would be at the top of the leaderboards!
And these leaderboards, they’re like a list of who’s best at catchin’ them balls that don’t count. Seems silly, but they keep track of it all. They even have leaderboards for interceptions called back since like, 1941, or somethin’. That’s a long time! That’s before I was even born. The New England Patriots, they had the most, or so I hear.
Why Keep Track of Interceptions That Don’t Count?
I asked my grandson, “Why they bother with all this?” He says it’s ’cause it shows who’s good at the game, even if the catch don’t count. He start talkin about slants and corners and drag and outs, and I told him “you are talking a different language!”. He says it’s important to predict interceptions. I just don’t know.
He says it’s like knowin’ the other team’s secrets. If you know where they like to throw the ball, you can be there to catch it. Even if it gets called back, it means you were in the right place at the right time. I still don’t see why you need a leaderboard for it but it is something to talk about I guess.

- That’s between October 4, 2018 and October 4 of some other year. They keep track of all that stuff.
All These Numbers Make My Head Spin
They got numbers for everything. How many catches, how many called back, how many times they run this way or that way. It’s too much for me to keep up with. All these stats. And NFL player stats. They just spout out numbers all day. I guess it is important information but I don’t really understand how.
Back in my day, we just watched the game and enjoyed it. We didn’t need all these numbers to tell us who was good. You could just see it with your own two eyes. But these young folks, they love their numbers. They say you need to see the data for interceptions called back. I think it would be all over the news if it was important.
Maybe It’s Not So Silly After All
I guess maybe there’s somethin’ to it, though. My grandson, he seems to think it’s important. And he’s a smart boy. Maybe these leaderboards for interceptions called back, they tell you somethin’ about the game that I don’t see. But it is kinda silly to keep track of something that doesn’t even count.
But still I don’t know why they need to keep track of something that doesn’t even officially count. Even if this Mahomes guy is good, why do we need a leaderboard to tell us that he is good at almost catching the ball?
Anyways, that’s what I heard about them leaderboards. Makes me shake my head, but what do I know? I’m just an old lady watchin’ the game. But I still think it is silly to keep track of the interceptions that are called back. A catch is a catch if you ask me. If you catch it, you catch it. No need to call it back!
