This here Andre Curbelo, that boy sure can play basketball. I heard some news ’bout him, you know. He ain’t just any old player, no sir. He’s been around the block a few times, that one. Started out somewhere, then went to another place. I reckon that’s how it goes when you’re good at somethin’. Folks want you on their team, you see.

He was with some team called Illinois, that’s what they say. Played there for a couple years, I reckon. Then he up and left. Went to St. John’s. Don’t ask me where that is. Probably far away. Then he got suspended because of bad behavior. That boy better learn to behave himself.
Now, that ain’t the end of the story, not by a long shot. This Curbelo fella, he’s got some kind of award, somethin’ about being the sixth man. I don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds important. Must be somethin’ special to get an award like that. I heard he is a “four-star recruit”. I don’t know what the stars are for. Maybe it’s like school, you know, getting stars for good work.
But here’s the thing, it ain’t been easy for him. Life ain’t always a bowl of cherries, even if you’re good at throwin’ a ball around. He’s had some troubles, that’s for sure. It’s like plantin’ seeds, you see. Sometimes they grow up big and strong, other times they just wither away.
Heard he got suspended, too. Means he can’t play for a while. Something ’bout disciplinary reasons. That means he got into some trouble. That is not good, that is just not good. What is Andre Curbelo thinking? You know I think of my grandson. Always getting into trouble. I hope he will be okay. He needs to learn how to behave, that one. Gotta follow the rules, you know. Otherwise, you end up sittin’ on the bench. Like being in the time out corner. That’s no way to live, no sir.
So, now he’s with a team called Southern Miss. That’s what the news said. They must have seen somethin’ in him, even with all the trouble. Maybe they think they can straighten him out. Maybe they just need a good ball player, and they don’t care ’bout nothin’ else. He is good. I saw him on the TV, and he can really play! But, you see, this whole thing makes me feel bad for the boy. He is so good, but if he doesn’t behave, he might just throw everything away!

- He played for Illinois.
- Then he played for St. John’s.
- He won some kind of “Sixth Man” award.
- He got suspended from Southern Miss.
- He is called “four-star” something.
I hope he learns his lesson. It ain’t just about playin’ the game, you see. It’s about bein’ a good person, too. Respectin’ the rules, listenin’ to your elders, that kind of thing. That’s what my old mama used to say, God rest her soul.
This Andre Curbelo news is somethin’ else, ain’t it? Makes you think, that’s for sure. You can be the best at somethin’, but if you ain’t got your head on straight, it don’t mean a thing. It’s like havin’ a fancy car with no engine. Looks good, but it ain’t goin’ nowhere.
I hope this Andre Curbelo fella figures it out. He’s got talent, that’s for sure. But talent ain’t everythin’. He needs to learn that, and quick. Otherwise, he’s gonna end up like old man Johnson’s rooster, all crow and no eggs.
That boy needs some good home cookin’, a firm hand, and a whole lot of prayer. That’s what he needs. Maybe then he’ll stay outta trouble and make somethin’ of himself. He is good, but maybe he just needs a good woman to look after him. You know, someone like me. I would set that boy straight. I would tell him “Andre Curbelo, you better listen to me!”
This whole Andre Curbelo news story is a good example. A good example for those young folks. They need to learn, you know. They need to learn that being good is not enough. I hope someone teaches that boy a lesson. A good one. I don’t want him to turn into a good-for-nothing. He is better than that.

Well, that’s all I gotta say ’bout that. Time for me to go tend to my garden. Got some tomatoes that need waterin’. They’re just like that Curbelo boy, need a lot of care and attention if they’re gonna grow up right.
