So, I finally got my hands on Granblue Fantasy: Relink the other day. Was pretty hyped, you know? Big JRPG fan here. Like most games in this style, the first thing I planned to do was dive into making my own character. I always spend way too long on that part, tweaking everything just right.
Anyway, I installed the game, booted it up. Went through the usual company logos and the fancy opening movie. Got to the main menu screen. Looked around for the ‘Create Character’ or ‘New Game’ option that would lead me there. Didn’t see an obvious ‘creator’ button, just ‘New Game’. Okay, figured it must be part of starting the story.
I clicked ‘New Game’ and started playing through the prologue. Pretty cool stuff, lots happening. I was controlling the main character, Gran I think? Or maybe it was Djeeta, I can’t remember which one I picked first. I kept playing, thinking, alright, maybe after this big intro sequence, it’ll let me customize.
Finished the prologue stuff, got into the first town hub area. Started looking through the menus again. Checked the system settings, party options, everything I could click on. Still no character creator. I was starting to get a bit confused. Where is it?
Then I started noticing the party screen more. You have Gran/Djeeta, Lyria, Vyrn, and soon Katalina and Rackam join up. You recruit more folks later. It slowly dawned on me… maybe you just… don’t make your own?
Yeah, turns out that’s exactly it. I poked around a bit more, just exploring the game’s systems, and it became super clear. Granblue Fantasy: Relink doesn’t actually have a character creation feature. You just play as the characters from the Granblue universe. You start as the Captain (Gran or Djeeta) and then unlock and swap between a whole roster of other established characters.
Honestly, I was a bit thrown off at first. Making my own unique hero is usually half the fun for me in RPGs. But I kept playing, trying out Katalina, then Rackam. And you know what? The existing characters are really well-designed, lots of different playstyles. I quickly found a few I enjoyed using. It’s different from what I expected, sure, but it works. The focus is definitely on playing these specific heroes and their stories within the world, not inserting your own custom creation.
So, that was my little journey trying to find the character creator in Relink. Ended up discovering there isn’t one! Still having a good time with the game though, just had to adjust my expectations a bit. It’s more about collecting and mastering the existing crew.
