So, I got curious the other day about how much boxing gloves actually weigh. I mean, I see those guys in the ring, throwing punches like it’s nothing, and I started wondering, “Are those gloves heavy or what?” So, I decided to find out for myself.

First, I did what everyone does when they need an answer – I looked it up online. Turns out, boxing gloves are measured in ounces, like, “oz”. Who knew? And apparently, the weight is a big deal. It changes how much padding is inside, which affects how fast you can throw a punch and how much it’s going to hurt if you get hit.
Then I found out that the usual gloves for just hitting those big punching bags are lighter, around 10-12 oz. Makes sense, right? You want to be quick and not tire your arms out too fast when you’re just practicing. It said these lighter gloves help you throw punches faster and be more accurate, but they still protect your hands from getting all messed up.
Next, I read that in those big-shot fights, like the one with Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, they actually use heavier gloves, like 14 oz. It was kind of surprising, but the article mentioned that it’s to slow the fighters down a bit and make the punches less intense. Maybe they don’t want anyone getting seriously hurt. I don’t really know.
The thing that really got me was finding out that these gloves are meant to mimic a real fight. I mean, I knew they were training, but to think they’re wearing gloves that make it feel like a real match is kind of intense, even though it’s not a real match.
Anyway, I decided to try this out. I went to a sports store, picked up a 12 oz glove, and put it on. It felt surprisingly heavy at first, but I guess that’s the point. I spent some time hitting a punching bag they had there, and I could definitely feel the difference compared to just hitting it with my bare hands. It was a good workout, to say the least.

I realized that if you want to get better at boxing, you gotta use different weights, just like the articles mentioned. If you want to be quick, use lighter gloves. If you want to work on your strength or if you’re gonna be hitting people back, go for the heavier ones. It’s all about figuring out what works for you and what your goals are. So, there you have it. That’s what I learned about boxing glove weights. It was a fun little experiment, and it definitely gave me a new appreciation for the sport and those who do it. I might even start boxing myself!
