My Own Little Experiment
Well, I spent a fair bit of time in the UK myself, living and working. Coming from a place where ‘dude’ gets thrown around pretty casually, I figured, maybe I could just slip it into conversation over there. Seemed easy enough. I mean, English is English, right? How different could it be?
So, I started trying it out. Not like, all the time, but here and there. Maybe chatting with someone down the pub, or just casually with folks I met. I’d drop a “Hey dude” or “What’s up, dude?” into the mix, thinking it sounded friendly and relaxed. Just testing the waters, you know?
What Actually Happened
It didn’t quite work like I thought. Most times, I didn’t get a bad reaction, not really. But I definitely got… looks. Like, a slight pause, maybe a confused half-smile. You could almost see the cogs turning: “Did he just call me… dude?”. It just felt a bit awkward, like wearing shoes on the wrong feet.
Then I started really listening. Paying attention to how people actually spoke to each other. And what did I hear constantly?

Seriously, ‘mate’ was everywhere. It was the go-to friendly term. ‘Dude’ just wasn’t part of the everyday local vocabulary, not in the same relaxed, universal way it is in some other places. Sure, maybe some younger people used it sometimes, probably picked up from the same movies I watched, but it wasn’t the norm for most folks I interacted with.
Adjusting My Habits
It didn’t take long for me to realise my little ‘dude’ experiment wasn’t hitting the mark. So, I consciously started phasing it out. I began trying ‘mate’ instead. At first, it felt a bit weird, like I was putting on an accent or something. But honestly? People responded much more naturally. It just flowed better in conversation.
Eventually, I just stopped using ‘dude’ altogether while I was there. Stuck to ‘mate’, or sometimes just didn’t use any term like that at all. It felt more respectful, like I was actually paying attention to how things were done locally, rather than just importing my own habits.
It’s a small thing, calling someone ‘dude’ versus ‘mate’. But it was a good little lesson for me. Showed me how even simple words can have totally different vibes depending on where you are. Just gotta listen and adapt, really. That was my experience, anyway.
