Hey everyone, so, I’ve been messing around with this whole “moving under braking” thing in F1, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. I started by just trying to figure out what it even was.

Turns out, it’s basically like swerving while you’re hitting the brakes, trying to get the other guy to mess up. I watched a bunch of videos of old races, trying to spot drivers doing it. It’s kinda sneaky, you know? Like, you’re braking, but then you suddenly dart to the side a little.
First, I tried to mimic it in a racing simulator. Total fail. I kept spinning out or crashing. It’s way harder than it looks. You gotta be super precise with the steering wheel and the brake pedal at the same time.
- Tried it on a straight.
- Then tried it going into a corner.
- Crashed a lot. Like, a LOT.
After a while, I got a little better. I could kinda sorta do it without crashing every single time. But it was still super inconsistent. Then I started reading up on the rules. Turns out, it’s actually not allowed in F1 anymore. They banned it a while back because it’s pretty dangerous. Makes sense, I guess, since I could barely do it without wiping out.
The Process:
- Watched videos: Spent hours just watching old races.
- Simulator practice: Tried to do it myself in the sim.
- Read the rules: Figured out why it’s banned.
- More practice: Kept trying, just for fun.
Even though it’s not allowed, it was still fun to try and figure it out. I mean, the brake system in the car was really amazing. I got a simple one: the brake pads have the same magnitude and act in pairs. But it is forbidden if the system or mechanism intentionally produces asymmetric braking.
It’s crazy how much skill those F1 drivers have. To be able to even think about doing that at those speeds is insane. I’m definitely not on that level. Not even close. But hey, it was a fun experiment. I learned a lot about car control and the rules of F1. Maybe next time I’ll try to tackle something a little less…crash-prone.

And I watched some news about Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, they had a collision in a race. So, I practiced more and more times. But it is a really hot topic to discuss whether drivers should be able to change direction under braking.
Anyways, that’s my little adventure into the world of moving under braking. Hope you guys found it somewhat interesting. If any of you have tried this, let me know how it went! Maybe you’re a natural, unlike me.
