america.vs.atlas: The Ultimate Showdown Is Here, Dont Miss Out!

Okay, so let me tell you about this little project I did over the weekend. I’ve been kind of curious about how often Club America and Atlas have faced off in soccer, and who’s been coming out on top more often. So, I decided to dive into it and see what I could find.

First, I started by just hitting up the usual spots online where they keep sports stats. I dug through a bunch of game records, starting from back in 2004, because that’s as far back as the data I could easily grab went. It took a bit of time to sift through everything and make sure I wasn’t missing any matches.

Found out these two teams have played each other 54 times since then. Pretty wild, right? Out of those, Atlas managed to win 14 games. Not too shabby, but Club America took the win in 27 games. That’s a pretty big difference. The rest, 13 games, ended in a draw. So, it’s clear Club America’s been doing better overall.

Then I got into the goals. Atlas scored a total of 66 goals across those games, which averages out to about 1.2 goals per game. Club America, on the other hand, scored 92 goals, averaging 1.7 goals per game. Again, Club America’s looking stronger on the offense.

I also checked out this thing called “Asian Handicap Win%”—it’s a betting thing, but it kind of gives you an idea of the expected outcome, you know? For the games between these two, it was 66.7%. I guess that means betting folks think Club America’s got the edge most of the time.

After that, I looked up some news about recent matches. Read that Club America beat Atlas 3-0 in a game not too long ago. There was this one player, a Chilean guy, who came in during the second half and scored a “golazo”—that’s like a super impressive goal. It was part of why Club America’s been on a winning streak.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what I did:

  • Gathered match data from 2004 onwards.
  • Tallied up wins, losses, and draws.
  • Calculated total goals and goals per game for each team.
  • Looked at the Asian Handicap Win% to see what bettors thought.
  • Read up on recent game news to see how the teams are doing now.

So yeah, that’s what I found out. Club America seems to be the stronger team historically, at least when they play against Atlas. But you know how sports are—anything can happen on game day! I just thought it was interesting to see the numbers and what they say.

This was a fun little project, and it really showed me how you can use simple data to get a better understanding of sports trends. Might do this again with some other teams!
