Ricky Vaughn Haircut: Get the Look(Simple Steps and Styling Tips)

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “Ricky Vaughn” haircut everywhere lately, and I gotta say, I was curious. It’s like, this wild, messy thing, but it somehow looks cool? I figured, why not give it a shot? Worst case, I look like an idiot for a few weeks. Best case, I pull off some kind of rebellious, baseball-movie-star vibe.

First, I had to figure out what this haircut actually was. I did some digging, and apparently, it’s from this old movie, “Major League”. The character, Ricky Vaughn, has this long-ish hair on top, kind of shaved on the sides, and it’s all over the place.

So, armed with a few blurry screenshots from the movie, I decided to take a trip to my barber. I’ve been going to this guy, Tony, for years. He’s seen me through some questionable hair choices, so I trust him. I showed him the pictures, and he just kind of chuckled. “You sure about this?” he asked. “It’s a bold move, man.” I told him to go for it, full send.

Preparation

  • Grew it out I let my hair grow longer than usual for a few weeks. I wanted to make sure there was enough on top to work with.
  • Gathered images I found some more pictures online, tried to get different angles of the haircut. It’s surprisingly hard to find good reference pics for this thing!
  • Mentally prepared I knew this was going to be a big change. I had to be ready for the potential ridicule, but also the potential awesomeness.

Tony started by trimming the top, keeping it pretty long, like in the pictures. Then, he took the clippers to the sides, buzzing them pretty close. I could feel the breeze on my scalp, it was a weird sensation. This was when i decided that i must go all the way down. He left a little bit of length on the sides, so it wasn’t a complete skin fade, but it was definitely short. I was sweating, I really wanted to see what I am looking like.

Styling

  • Towel dry After washing, I just roughly towel-dried my hair. This haircut is supposed to look messy, so no need for a blow dryer.
  • Product Tony recommended some kind of pomade or paste. Something with a bit of hold, but not too stiff. I went with a matte paste, ’cause I didn’t want it to look too shiny.
  • Mess it up This is the key part. I just ran my fingers through my hair, kind of scrunching it up and pulling it in different directions. The goal is to make it look like you just rolled out of bed, but in a cool way.

When he finally spun the chair around, I was shocked. It was… actually kind of cool? I mean, it was definitely different. It was wild, unruly, and a little bit ridiculous. But I didn’t hate it. In fact, I think I might actually love it. My wife doesn’t like it tho, she said i am a weirdo.

It’s been a few days now, and I’m still getting used to it. I’ve gotten a few weird looks, but also some compliments. People seem to be intrigued by it. It’s definitely a conversation starter. And honestly, it’s kind of fun to have a haircut that’s a little bit out there. It makes me feel, I don’t know, more interesting?

So, if you’re thinking about trying the Ricky Vaughn haircut, I say go for it. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely an experience. Just be prepared to own it, and maybe have a good sense of humor about the whole thing. And, of course, find a barber who’s not afraid to take some risks.

Would I do it again? Maybe. It’s definitely a fun, temporary style. But I think I’ll probably go back to something a little more normal next time. Or maybe I’ll just shave my head completely. Who knows, and who knows what my wife would say!
