Olympic Welterweight Boxing: These Underdogs Could Surprise Everyone This Year!

So, I’ve been getting into boxing lately, right? Not like, getting in the ring myself, but watching it. And with the Olympics coming up, I figured I’d dive into the welterweight division ’cause that’s where all the action seems to be.

Olympic Welterweight Boxing: These Underdogs Could Surprise Everyone This Year!

First thing I did was, you know, hit up the internet. I gotta say, figuring out who’s fighting who is a bit of a mess. There was some drama with the boxing folks and the Olympic folks, which led to boxing being kicked out of the Olympic program, along with some other sports. It has something to do with ongoing disputes.

But there are still many people who are eager to watch boxing matches. Like some folks were saying 2025 is gonna be a big year for underdogs in boxing. I saw some chatter about a guy named Alex Pereira who is ranked No.2. Apparently, he’s a UFC light heavyweight champ with a 12-2 record. Sounds pretty good. The only reason he wasn’t No. 1 was that Aspinall is expected to fight Jon Jones.

Then there’s this Marco Verde from Mexico. He’s the underdog I’m keeping an eye on. I also read about some other boxers named Jack Catterall, Fernando Martinez, and Hector Luis Garcia who apparently pulled off some surprise wins.

Then I tried to find out how to actually watch this stuff. Turns out, if you’re not there in person, your best bet is this Discovery+ app thing. You gotta pay for it, though. It is 3.99 pounds a month. I have to say that I don’t want to pay for it. So I gave up watching the live broadcast and turned to watch the highlights.

I also learned that boxing wasn’t in the 1912 Olympics ’cause Swedish law didn’t allow it at the time. And apparently, some boxers have won like, three or more Olympic medals. They must be crazy good.

I also got the info that only two of the eight people on the USA team are still able to fight for the medals. Not sure what happened to the rest, but that’s a bummer for them. Anyway, from what I am seeing, I think this year it’s all about the underdogs. So I watched a bunch of their old fights to see what they’re all about. Let me tell you, it’s gonna be interesting to see how they do.

So yeah, that’s my little journey into Olympic welterweight boxing so far. It’s been a bit of a rabbit hole, but I think I’ve got a decent handle on it now. I’m definitely gonna be watching to see how it all plays out.

  • Watched a bunch of old fights to see the potential underdogs.
  • Found out boxing was banned in the 1912 Olympics due to Swedish law.
  • Read about some boxers who won three or more Olympic medals.
  • Learned that only two of eight Team USA boxers are still in the running for medals.
  • Checked out Discovery+ to see live matches but didn’t want to pay for it.

Wrapping Up

Well, that’s about it for my deep dive into Olympic welterweight boxing. It’s been a wild ride, digging through all the info and trying to make sense of it all. I’m no expert, but I feel like I’ve got a pretty good grasp of what’s going on. I’m really looking forward to seeing how these underdogs do. It’s gonna be a fun ride, and I’m here for it.
