US Open Tennis Volunteer 2024: Perks, Roles & How to Get Involved (Everything You Need to Know)

Okay, so, let me tell you about this whole US Open Tennis volunteer thing I got myself into for 2024. It all started when I saw this post online. I’ve always been a huge tennis fan, you know, and the US Open is, like, the granddaddy of them all. So when I saw they were looking for volunteers, I thought, “Why not? This could be fun.”

I found out that they need folks for all sorts of things. I went to this website, *, and saw that this is a one-time opportunity located in Queens. You can help out with giving directions, checking tickets, or even being part of the ball crew. That last one sounded intense, though – running around on the court, grabbing balls, being right there in the action. I started to read about the requirements and benefits for volunteers.

I started digging around for more information. It turns out the registration isn’t until spring of 2024, which gave me some time to think it over. And they process the applications on a “first-come, first-served” basis, so I knew I had to be on the ball if I really wanted to do this. I even found out that you gotta be at least 14 years old to volunteer. I mean, I’m way past that, but it’s good to know they’re getting the young folks involved, too. And if you’re under 18, you need some kind of working papers from New York State.

Then, there was this whole thing about being a “ball crew team member.” That’s where you’re actually on the court, you know? Apparently, you need to be 14 years old by July 1st of the tournament year. I guess that makes sense – they want people who are mature enough to handle the pressure and all that. I watched a few matches from previous years, just to see what the ball crew folks were up to. Man, those guys are fast! They’re like little ninjas, darting around, scooping up balls, handing out towels to the players. It looked tiring but also kinda awesome.

I kept reading and found out that the US Open is, like, super old. I found that the tournament is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world. They used to call it the “U.S. National Championships” back in the day. It’s open to everyone, amateurs and pros alike. It’s not easy to get in as an amateur player, though. They say you need to get your handicap down to practically nothing, like 0.4 or something, and then go through a bunch of qualifying rounds. Crazy, right?

After going through all of this, I decided to give it a shot. I filled out the application as soon as it became available in spring, crossing my fingers that I’d get picked. And guess what? I did! I ended up getting assigned to the Guest Services team. It wasn’t as glamorous as being on the court, but I was still pumped. I got to help people find their seats, answer questions about the tournament, and just generally soak up the atmosphere.

The whole experience was amazing. I met so many interesting people, from die-hard tennis fans to folks who were just there for the spectacle. I even got to see some of the big-name players up close, which was a huge thrill. And the energy of the crowd, especially during the big matches, was just electric.

Here are a few things I did during my volunteer gig:

  • Helped people find their seats and navigate the grounds.
  • Answered questions about the tournament schedule, players, and facilities.
  • Assisted with crowd control during peak times.
  • Worked with other volunteers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Would I do it again?

Absolutely! It was a ton of work, but it was also one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. If you’re a tennis fan and you’re looking for a way to get involved, I highly recommend checking out the US Open volunteer program. You won’t regret it!
