Okay, so let’s talk about this crazy hag in Baldur’s Gate 3. I was going through my first playthrough and stumbled into her lair, and man, it was a wild ride.

The Lead Up
I started off just exploring, minding my own business. Found this seemingly innocent old lady in a teahouse. Turns out, she wasn’t so innocent. Things got weird fast, and I ended up having to chase her through this fireplace into her actual lair. Creepy, right?
The Fight Begins
So, I’m in this underground lair, and the hag is nowhere to be seen. She goes invisible right at the start of the fight. Classic villain move. I remembered seeing somewhere online that someone used the Grease spell to deal with her invisibility, so I figured I’d give it a shot. My first character who could cast Grease, I had them target where the hag was last standing. Then, my next character with Grease, I aimed it closer to the fireplace, which I assumed was her escape route. It actually worked! The Grease spell canceled out her invisibility. I felt like such a genius.
Getting Serious
Now that I could see her, it was time to get down to business. I had heard from others that this fight is tough, and they weren’t kidding. It is suggested to make sure you’re at least level 5 before taking on this hag because there are some big-time power spikes at that level. I made sure my party was leveled up and ready. And let me tell you, Magic Missile becomes your best friend in this fight. It does decent damage and helps chip away at her health.
Going All Out
- Use Haste/Speed: This lets you take extra actions, which is super helpful.
- Try for a Surprise Round: If you can get the jump on her, you get a whole round of attacks before she can react.
- Use Crowd Control (CC): Spells like Hold Person are great because they can completely lock her down.
- Coat Your Weapons: Adding extra damage types to your weapons can really boost your damage output.
- Get Her Wet: If you can get the hag wet, then hit her with cold or lightning damage, it does double the damage.
I tried to do all of the above. I had one character cast Haste on our fighter, who then rushed in to get a surprise round. I had my mage use Hold Person, which, if it lands, guarantees critical hits. My rogue was coating their weapons with all sorts of nasty stuff. I even managed to get her wet with a water bottle and then had my mage zap her with lightning. It was intense but satisfying to see those big damage numbers pop up.
Victory!
It took a few tries, and I definitely had to reload a couple of times, but I finally managed to beat her. It felt amazing to overcome such a tough fight. It was one of those moments that make you feel like a real strategist.

So yeah, that’s my story of taking down the hag in her lair. It was a tough fight, but using these tactics really helped me out. Hope this helps anyone else struggling with this encounter!
