Highland Links Golf Cape Cod Guide: Everything You Absolutely Need Before You Play a Round.

Okay, so I finally got out to play Highland Links up in Truro on Cape Cod the other day. I’d heard a ton about it, you know, being one of the oldest, most authentic links courses around here, right next to the ocean and that cool lighthouse. Had to check it off the list.

Getting Started

Packed up the clubs early, took that drive up Route 6. It’s always nice heading towards the outer Cape. Pulled into the little parking area, and yeah, it’s not fancy. The clubhouse is pretty basic, real old-school vibe, which honestly, I kinda liked. No big resort feel here, just pure golf.

Checked in, paid the greens fee. The folks there were friendly enough, pretty laid back. Grabbed a pull cart – yeah, decided to walk it, really wanted to get the full experience. You just gotta walk a course like this.

Out on the Course

Stepped onto the first tee, and wow. You can immediately smell the salt air. The course isn’t super long, but you can tell right away it’s gonna be tricky. The fairways aren’t perfect carpets, they’re kinda rugged, rolling, just like you’d expect from a true links course. Lots of fescue waiting to gobble up bad shots.

The wind was definitely a factor. Coming right off the Atlantic. Some holes it helped, others it was right in your face or pushing the ball sideways. Made club selection a real guessing game sometimes. Lost a couple of balls in that tall grass, not gonna lie. It’s tough!

  • Hitting approach shots was interesting. The greens are small and have lots of bumps and slopes.
  • Some spots, you’re hitting right towards the ocean, it feels like.
  • And then there’s the Highland Light, the lighthouse. It’s right there, watching over you on a few holes. Pretty cool backdrop.

I wasn’t exactly scoring great, but that wasn’t really the point. It was more about just playing this raw, historic course. It feels like golf probably felt a hundred years ago. You hit a good shot, it feels earned. You hit a bad one, well, the course punishes you pretty quickly.

Wrapping Up

Finished up the round feeling tired but happy. The walk, the wind, the challenge – it was great. It’s not for everyone, maybe. If you want perfect conditions and wide-open fairways, this ain’t it. But if you appreciate old-school, quirky, real links golf with amazing views, you gotta try it.

Grabbed a quick drink afterward, just sat there looking out towards the ocean. It’s just a special spot. Definitely felt like I’d played somewhere unique. Glad I finally made the trip.
