So, I heard about this guy, Gonzalo Gonzalez, or maybe it was a method named after him, I dunno. The point is, people were talking about this way he had of organizing things, supposed to be real efficient.

My workbench was a complete mess, seriously. Tools everywhere, bits of projects, dust bunnies the size of rats. Figured, okay, let’s give this Gonzalo Gonzalez thing a shot. What could go wrong, right?

Getting Started (or Making a Bigger Mess)

First thing I did was pull everything off the bench. Every single screwdriver, bolt, scrap of wood. Piled it all on the floor. Honestly, it looked even worse. Felt like I’d taken one step forward and about five steps back. Standard procedure for me, really.

Then came the tricky part: actually organizing it according to this ‘method’. I looked online, but all I found was kinda vague stuff. Nothing concrete like “put the hammers here, saws there”. It was more… philosophical? Seemed like a lot of hot air to me at first.

Trying to Make Sense of It

I spent a good hour just staring at the pile. Tried sorting by tool type. Then by size. Then by how often I used them. Nothing felt right. It wasn’t clicking. I was getting pretty fed up.

  • Step 1: Stare at the chaos.
  • Step 2: Try a logical system. Fail.
  • Step 3: Get annoyed. Almost quit.
  • Step 4: Have a rethink.

Okay, maybe I was overthinking it. Maybe this Gonzalo Gonzalez approach wasn’t about super strict rules. Maybe it was more about how you work? So, I stopped trying to make perfect categories.

The Breakthrough (Kind Of)

I started grabbing tools that I usually use together for specific tasks. Like, all my soldering stuff went into one box. All the wood carving tools went into another area. Stuff for fixing electronics in another. It wasn’t about the tool type so much as the job.

Didn’t buy fancy containers either. Just used old plastic tubs and some dividers I made from scrap plywood. Kept it simple. Less thinking, more doing.

What I Reckon Now

So, after a whole afternoon of messing around, the bench is… organized. Well, organized for me, anyway. It’s not showroom perfect, but I can actually find stuff now without digging for ten minutes.

My take? This whole Gonzalo Gonzalez thing, at least the way I ended up doing it, was basically just grouping stuff by workflow. Maybe that was his genius idea, maybe I just stumbled onto plain old common sense and slapped his name on it. Hard to say.

Was it revolutionary? Nah. Did it work? Yeah, eventually. Took longer than I thought, and wasn’t quite the magic bullet I was hoping for. But hey, the bench is clean. That’s a win in my book.
