Okay, so yesterday I was messing around with some images from Bruges, you know, that super pretty city in Belgium. I wanted to see if I could make them look even cooler, kinda like those Instagram filters but, like, DIY style.

First thing I did was grab a bunch of photos I had lying around. Some were from my phone, some from my actual camera. I chucked them all into a folder on my desktop, nice and organized, right?
Then, I fired up my image editor – I’m using GIMP ’cause it’s free and I’m cheap. I opened up one of the pics, it was a shot of the canal with all those cute little houses. Pretty standard tourist stuff.
I started playing with the colors. Bumped up the saturation a bit, made the blues of the water really pop. Then I messed with the contrast, darkened the shadows, brightened the highlights. It already looked way better!
Next up, I added a slight vignette. You know, that dark edge effect that makes the center of the photo stand out? Just a subtle one though, didn’t want to go overboard.
I was also trying to remove some tourists from the image using the clone stamp tool, damn it was hard, there was so many people!

I tried a few different things. I added a slight blur to the background to make it look like I had more depth of field. That didn’t really work so well, looked kinda fake. So, I undid that.
After tweaking everything for like an hour (seriously, I got lost in it), I saved the image. Then I did the same thing to a few other photos. I tried to keep the same vibe across all of them, so they looked like they belonged together.
Here’s a quick rundown of the steps I took:
- Opened the image in GIMP.
- Adjusted the brightness and contrast.
- Played with the saturation and vibrance.
- Added a subtle vignette.
- Sharpened the image (just a little bit).
- Saved it as a JPEG.
It was a fun little project. It definitely made my Bruges photos look a lot more interesting. Maybe I’ll try doing some black and white conversions next time. Who knows!
The trick is just to experiment and see what looks good. Don’t be afraid to mess things up – you can always undo it!

Anyway, that was my little image editing adventure for yesterday. Hope you found it interesting. Maybe it’ll inspire you to play around with your own photos!
