Thinking about an orange chrome car wrap? (Here is what you need to know about this bold finish)

Okay, let me tell you about my little project trying to get that shiny, bright orange chrome look on something. I’d seen it around, you know, mostly on fancy cars or bikes, and thought it looked pretty cool. Decided I wanted to try it myself on a smaller scale first.

Getting Started

First thing, I needed something to actually paint. I found an old metal bracket lying around in the garage, perfect little test piece. Didn’t want to ruin anything important right off the bat.

Then came the hunt for the actual “orange chrome” stuff. This wasn’t as easy as just buying one can. From what I gathered, you usually need a super shiny base, like a mirror chrome effect, and then a transparent orange color coat on top. So, I went looking for those.

  • Found a spray can promising a “chrome mirror finish”. Grabbed that.
  • Needed a transparent orange. Looked at candy paints or specific transparent sprays. Picked one up that seemed like the right shade.
  • Also got some primer and fine sandpaper, because everyone says prep work is key.

The Actual Work

Alright, time to actually do it. I took the metal bracket outside on a nice, calm day. No wind is important with spray paint, learned that the hard way before.

First step, preparation. I cleaned the bracket really well, got all the grease and dirt off. Then I gave it a light sanding, just to give the primer something to grip onto. Wiped it down again to get rid of the dust.

Next up, primer. Sprayed a couple of light coats, letting it dry a bit in between. This felt pretty standard, just like any other spray paint job. Let the primer cure fully, waited like the instructions said.

Now for the tricky part: the chrome base. The can said to apply it over a glossy black base for the best mirror effect. Okay, fine. So I first sprayed a glossy black coat over the primer. Let that dry completely, made sure it was smooth.

Then, I started spraying the chrome paint. This stuff was finicky. You have to do really light, misty coats. Too heavy and it just looks like silver paint, not chrome. It took several passes, building it up slowly. It looked okay, kind of reflective, but maybe not a perfect mirror like I hoped. Patience is definitely needed here.

After letting the chrome layer dry for a good while – longer than I wanted to wait, honestly – it was time for the orange. Again, light coats were the name of the game with the transparent orange. I sprayed it over the chrome finish. The first coat barely looked orange, just a hint. Second coat, it started to show up more. Third coat, it was looking properly orange and still had some of that metallic shine coming through from the chrome base.

The Result

So, how did it turn out? Well, it’s definitely orange, and it’s definitely metallic looking. Is it that perfect, deep, liquid-looking orange chrome you see on show cars? Not quite. The “chrome” base wasn’t a perfect mirror to start with, so the final effect is more like a bright, shiny metallic orange.

It looks pretty neat, though! Especially for a first try with spray cans in the garage. The key things I learned:

  • Surface prep is absolutely essential. Don’t skip it.
  • Getting a true mirror chrome finish from a spray can is tough. Maybe needs specific techniques or better products.
  • Applying the transparent color evenly and lightly over the chrome is critical to keep the shine.

Overall, it was a fun experiment. The bracket looks interesting, a bright pop of metallic orange. Maybe I’ll try again on something else, focusing more on getting that base layer super smooth and reflective. It’s definitely a process, not just a quick spray job.
