So, I was cleaning out the garage. You know, the usual weekend mess. Found this beat-up Mets cap under a pile of junk. And it made me think of Tom Glavine. Yeah, Glavine pitching for the Mets. Still feels weird saying it.

I honestly couldn’t quite place everything from back then. It was a big deal, him coming over from the Braves. A real head-scratcher at the time, if I’m being honest. So I thought, alright, let’s actually look this up again. What was that whole period like?
Fired up the laptop. Thing’s getting slow, probably need a new one soon, but whatever. Typed “Tom Glavine Mets” into the search bar. You know how it is. Just started clicking.
Spent maybe an hour just reading old news bits, forum posts from back then. People were really split, weren’t they? Some excited, some just couldn’t believe it.
Trying to remember the games
Reading isn’t the same as seeing it, though. So I went looking for videos. YouTube’s got everything, but man, the quality on some of those old clips… terrible. Found a few decent ones though. Seeing him throw in that Mets jersey, with Shea Stadium in the background… yeah, still jars the brain a little.
Just sat there for a while, watching highlights, some old game recaps. It wasn’t all bad, you know? He had some good stretches. Definitely won us some games.

- Signing him felt huge. Like, maybe this was the move.
- He could still pitch, definitely had innings left in that arm.
- But it wasn’t like his prime Braves years, obviously.
- And yeah, everyone remembers how it ended. Can’t really forget that last game. Rough.
But digging back like this, it wasn’t just about wins and losses. It was remembering being a fan during that time. The arguments with friends who hated the signing. The hope you felt when he pitched well. The sheer strangeness of it all. That’s what stuck with me going through this stuff.
It was what it was, I guess. A Hall of Famer spending a few years on the wrong side of the rivalry, depending on how you look at it. Didn’t bring a championship, ended kinda rough. But looking back? Definitely a chapter you don’t forget if you’re a Mets fan. Spending an afternoon just clicking around, remembering? Not the worst way to spend time. Time flies, man. Crazy.
Anyway, just sharing my little dive back into the Glavine-Mets thing. Funny what you find yourself thinking about when you’re supposed to be cleaning.
