1989 NFL Playoffs: Who Won It All? (A Look Back at the Champions)

Okay, here is the blog content based on the title “1989 NFL Playoffs” :

1989 NFL Playoffs: Who Won It All? (A Look Back at the Champions)

Man, I spent the whole weekend digging into the 1989 NFL playoffs. What a wild ride that was! I started by just wanting to see how the 49ers did that year, and before I knew it, I was down a rabbit hole of stats and old game summaries.

First, I pulled up the overall playoff bracket. I wanted to get a feel for who played who and how each team got there. I noticed right away that the 49ers were dominant, but it was cool to see some other teams like the Broncos and Rams making some noise. It was also really cool to see that the Rams’ victory in the 1989 playoffs marked their final playoff win before their move to St. Louis in 1995. It would be years before they tasted such success again.

Then I went team by team. I started with the 49ers since they won the Super Bowl that year. Turns out, they crushed it in the playoffs, and that Super Bowl win against the Bengals was their fourth. 20-16 at Joe Robbie Stadium, that’s insane! The place was sold out with 75,000 people attending the game. It seems that everyone recognized that the 49ers were the team of the ’80s.

  • San Francisco 49ers: I checked their scores and who they played against. They completely dominated, and it was no wonder they went all the way. They completely shut down the other teams.
  • Denver Broncos: These guys were pretty good, too. They won their third AFC title, but they obviously couldn’t get past the 49ers.
  • Los Angeles Rams: They had a decent run, but they also fell short. It was interesting to see their game against the Eagles. This match was tough to the end. But Greg Bell had 124 rushing yards, which was crazy impressive.

After that, I started looking at some of the other games, especially the wildcard and divisional rounds. I saw that the Steelers and Oilers had a crazy overtime game. Some of the scores were pretty wild, like that 56-23 game in week 8, and then 55-10 at the Super Bowl! What was that about?

I also found a site that listed all the teams, standings, and scores for the whole season. I spent a good chunk of time looking through that, just seeing how each team did week by week. I was curious about the teams that were close but didn’t make it to the end.

What a blast from the past.

Anyway, it was a fun trip down memory lane. I didn’t realize how much I’d enjoy looking back at old football games. I might do this again sometime for another season. If you guys have any suggestions, let me know!

Hope you guys enjoy this little recap of my weekend project. It was a lot more fun than I expected! Catch you all in the next one!
